Change of Address

I have been on break from the blog this past week 7 weeks. It was an unscheduled break, therefore I did not have anything lined up to auto-post while I was absent. As my daughter would say, Sawwy.

While I was back home, I was without internet access for a few days. Since I couldn’t log on and post, I got to thinking about the direction of this blog–where it has been and where I wanted it to go. I think that I have come up with an idea that will provide me a bit more focus while still allowing me the freedom to ramble, which I am so prone to do.

I have also decided that it is time to unveil a bit more about myself, though my family will still use pseudonyms.

I do have my own domain name now. The Road To Home (dot) net. I have had it for a few weeks now. It has been hard trying to decide what to use it for, but now it is ready. There may eventually be a few ads here and there, but hopefully they will not be too intrusive. If they are, let me know. Other than that, there will not be too many changes. Thank you all for reading here at Muzakosis for this past year. It has been a wonderful learning experience for me. I hope to “see” you all over at my new digs. Feel free to drop me a line at any time.

Thanks again, y’all.

Tinkering Around

Sorry for my absence lately. I have been developing some new technical skills. I’ll fill you all in at a later date, but I am getting excited about it.

I have also been getting ready to go home for the weekend.  My nephew is turning 4 years old and we just can’t miss that!

So, I guess what I am saying is that I will be going on a bit of a hiatus.  Don’t know when I will be back.  No WFMW this week either.  Slacker Sunday will auto-post, however.

This just made me laugh and laugh!

WFMW: Can Mama Help?

wfmw-banner.jpg

Avast, me hearties! Today being International Talk Like a Pirate Day and all, methinks I should share one of my most coveted tips for keeping the crew in line. Can Mama Help? See, me hearties, when I spy my little lassie avoiding doing something she has been told to do, me asks her, “Can Mama Help?”

Here are a few examples:

Ay Lassie! You are not swabbing the poop deck as Captain Mama has asked! Can Mama Help?

Avast me Lassie! Can Mama Help you finish gathering up your pieces of eight before you go to bed?

Usually, by offering to help, me little Lass gets back on course with the wind in her sails. We get our tasks accomplished and no one has to walk the plank.

Methinks that is what is working for this ship. What is working for your ship? Steer your vessel over to Rocks in My Dryer and tell the world what you do to keep your crew shipshape.

Britney Sim Vid

At least the sim looks like she is having a good time, not to mention she is dancing better.

WFMW: Restaurant Crayons

wfmw-banner.jpg

We eat out a whole lot, y’all. I mean tons. I have been living in this place since the 3rd week in August…and I have yet to make it to the grocery store. We are talking bare cupboards here. This means we usually spend dinner in a restaurant. Why is it that all restaurants have inferior crayons? I think that they pay less for them, so there is more wax than pigment. This means that they break very easily. Baby girl almost always ends up breaking her restaurant crayons. I decided that we should take some of our own crayons with us, as back-ups. Instead of lugging around the entire box, I found a lidded container that worked very well.

mms.gif

MMs Minis Containers make the perfect Crayon Holders!! I get the smaller size and it is perfect for holding 5 crayons. This means that they don’t get crushed in my bag when we are on the run. Now, I always have crayons with me! Next time I am in a chocolate kind of mood, I may just get an extra to keep in the car for those “just in case” times.

This is what is working for me! What works for you? Head on over to Rocks in My Dryer to find other tips and tricks that might just work for you too!

I will never forget.

Editor’s Note: I originally posted this last year on a different blog.  I wrote it in response to the “5 years later” rememberances that were taking place last year.  I decided to post it again.  I will never forget that day.

9/11/2001

On the morning of 9/11/01 I awoke in my normal fashion. I was in my last semester of college. Senior-itis had set in particularly bad. I had other things on my mind, like planning a wedding. I had a pretty good routine, honed down to only the most important steps. Every morning I would wake up and hit the snooze button on the alarm two or three times before actually venturing out of the bed. This bad habit inevitably left me rushing to get out the door in time to make class.

The class that I had on Tuesdays and Thursdays was a Public Speaking Class. It wasn’t your typical speech class, either. It was a very small class and the President of the University was the instructor. Because of this, we were able to meet in his office suite. I will never forget walking up the staircase to his office that day. I turned the corner in his office and his secretary motioned me into a different room than we normally used for class.

In this room, we had a television with a cable hook-up. I remember sitting in the floor with some of my other classmates, the President, his staff, and various other people from the building. Aaron Brown was on CNN desperately trying to keep everyone up to speed with what little information he had been given. There had been a commercial airplane crash into the side of one of the World Trade Center Towers. All aspects of the story were sketchy at this point. There were also (what turned out to be false) reports of fires sweeping the Mall in D.C. I had arrived just in time to see the second attack on the World Trade Center. I will never forget screaming when we saw that. We all realized that we were watching live television, and it was terrifying. I remember the silence in the room being overwhelming. The television was the only sound. The reporter tried with all of his might to keep his composure. We just sat in silence, punctuated by occasional sniffles and sobs, trying to grasp the seriousness of what we were witnessing. We then learned about he attack on the Pentagon, as well.

At this University, we always had Chapel on Tuesdays. This met directly after my first class. As we all assembled, there was a somber feeling among everyone in the auditorium. Fortunately, the powers-that-be decided that no one was in a a state of mind to endure a full chapel service–we basically prayed and got out of there. I found Dr. D first, then I found a TV.

For hours, no, days, I remember being glued to TV. Most of the other classes for the day were canceled, so I had plenty of time to watch. I watched as many channels as I possibly could. When reports of gas shortages came on, I rushed to the gas station and waited to fill my tank. I ran to the grocery store and got the staples. Like many people, I was just doing the things that I thought I should do. In reality, there was no need to do these things, it was just all that we knew to do.

Like many Americans, I was so steeped in the news coverage that I didn’t sleep well for weeks. We didn’t know what was going to come next. None of us had ever been through something like this, therefore we didn’t have any idea how to cope. I remember a few times waking up in the night, shaking, because I was so scared. I dreamed of the news coverage that I saw. I had seen the images of the towers fall over and over again on television, and now in my sleep.

I finally had to turn off the television. To this day, I am still not ready to watch much coverage on 9/11. The movies that have come out are far to real for me to watch. Even re-broadcasts of things that I have previously seen are too much for me. Perhaps the worst thing, however, is the 911 tapes that have been released. I just can’t listen to these tapes without getting a real sense of fear all over again.

For the days, weeks, months, and now years afterwards people have been telling the American Public that we should just go on with our lives and not let “the terrorists” get to us. That seems to be what we should do. I want to do that. But how do you do it? How do you put aside every fear in your mind and go on with life? Just this morning, I was watching Rudy Giuliani being interviewed on “Today” by Ann Curry. He made no attempt to gloss over his opinion that there will be another terroristic attack on American Soil. With comments like this, how do you ignore “the threat” and go on? When is it safe, and when is it not? I am just not sure that we will ever know for sure. Actually, I’m not sure if we ever knew for sure.

No more, please.

I just watched Britney Spears’ “Comeback” performance on the VMAs. She attempted to lip-sync and dance to her new single, “Gimme More”. Y’all, that was horrible. Just dreadful. I think that I could have done better, and I can’t even dance!!!!! First of all, I think that she has forgotten how to lip-sync. Her mouth was not moving with the music at all. It was so bad, I almost wanted her to just close her mouth completely. It was distracting! Unfortunately, it was not as distracting as watching her lazy ass try and keep up with her dancers. The back-up dancers actually had a good routine going for them. They knew their choreography and looked professional while dancing. Britney obviously was having trouble learning the new steps. She was sloppy and tired on every single move. She used to be a great dancer…what happened? And who the hell picked out her outift!? Someone needs new people to surround her. Yes-men are not good for helping you stage a comeback, Brit.

Edited to add: I put the video up so you could see it if you haven’t. Check out the craptacular event above.

The Goddaughter?

Come closer. I’ll make you an offer. You won’t refuse it.

Dishpan Hands

The Tree House does not have a dishwasher. We knew going in that this was going to be a huge sacrifice for our lazy butts. Man, I had no idea just how big of a sacrifice it was going to be! I just spent a solid hour standing at my tiny sink scrubbing a week’s worth of dishes. My hands are all pruny and shriveled up, and I wreak of dishwashing liquid. That is not a good thing, in case you were wondering!

But I got it all done.

WFMW: The Brand Loyal Edition!

wfmw-banner.jpg

This week, Shannon over at Rocks in My Dryer is posing an all American question, What Brands do you always buy? I found this a very interesting question. A few items popped into my mind immediately, but other than those, I’m not sure I am really that “brand loyal”. Here is my list of what we must buy:

Cottonelle Toilet Paper–No Dyes or Perfumes that can be irritating. It is soft and does not clog our pipes. I don’t buy anything else anymore. I also use their wipes for Baby Girl’s Adventures in Potty Training!

Bounty Paper Towels–What can I say other than it is the “Quicker, Thicker, Picker-Upper.” I will only buy generic (or another brand) it they are out of Bounty.

Pepcid Complete–Nothing else works as well for the middle-of-the-night acid reflux. It does not taste too bad, and it is WAY better than the “foamy stuff”.

Pampers Diapers–I know. They cost boucoups more money, but we have had such good luck with them, I’m scared to try something different!

Diaper Goop–The best stuff that I have found for Baby Girl’s nasty diaper rashes. It can even be applied on top of prescription rash cream to lock-in the Rx. It does not hurt that it is made in Little Rock, AR!

Coke–What can I say? I will (probably) NEVER buy generic coke again. It is just not the same! Being the Southern Gal that I am, it is Coke all the way, baby!

Neutrogena Rainbath Shower Gel–Dr. D likes it way better than anything else. It smells really great (yeah, I like to use it too…) and seems to leave less soap scum.

Crest Toothpaste–I’m really picky with taste and textures. I found a Crest toothpaste that I really like and I’m sticking with it.

Crocs–I’m a total Croc snob. I have 2 pair of them (both black) and I love them to pieces. They may be ugly as sin, but they are the most comfortable shoes that I have ever owned, hands down. I will only buy the official brand ones for myself, however. They are noticeably more comfortable. They offer more spring to the step than the fake crocs (or frocs, as they have been come to be known). My daughter does have some frocs but only because it is very hard to fine the real ones in her size! (She does have real pink crocs. They are her favorite shoes ever because she can put them on and take them off all by herself!)

What can’t you live without? I’m sure there are other things, but I just can’t think of them right now. Head on over to Rocks in My Dryer to find out what other folks pay the big bucks for!

New Theme…again.

I get tired and need a change occasionally.  I’m not sure if I like this or not.  We’ll see if it stays.  Let me know what you think.

Although there is some profanity, I thought this was a hoot. Who knew these things were this strong?

WFMW: Frugal Handsoap

wfmw-banner.jpg

I have stopped buying handsoap at my house!! Seriously, y’all. I don’t buy handsoap. I only buy dishsoap.

I learned this trick after reading about one of the pampered chef foaming soap dispensers. All you do is fill the container with just a tiny bit of soap and add water. Swirl around to mix together and it dispenses a beautifully thick foam. I had one of these fancy-schmancy soap dispensers but it finally broke and we did without for a long time. Until I found this.

soap.jpg

I already use method products in just about every room in my house. Their multipurpose cleaner is wonderfully gentle to use and it smells great. They also have tons of other semi-earth friendly products, including dishsoap and handsoap. I have started just getting the dishsoap and refilling my handsoap pump with a tiny bit. It produces a luxurious (yes, luxurious) foam that is PERFECT for my little toddler! She loves to squirt it out and wash her own hands. It is already bubbled up enough that my little one does not have to struggle with making it suds herself.

This is what is working for me. What works for you? Head on over to Rocks in My Dryer to find other tips and tricks, and to post your own

*Updated:

Lori: Yes, the top on the cheaper method dispenser unscrews. I don’t think that they make thier own refill soap yet, so I just put the dishsoap directly into that with a touch of warm water. It works great!

Nikki: Yeah, my pump got stuck to the point it was a huge hassle to “un-stick” it. We just tossed it, eventually. This works better anyway….and when it stops working I will just recycle it and get another cheapie!

Slacker Sunday #6

Seriously folks.   I can’t even find the words to express my sorrow to her parents.

I Made It!!!!!!

Honestly, I didn’t really think that I would make it here.  I was beginning to think that this was a dream that would never be realized!  I am so glad to be here!  The flight was successful and smooth.  I could have not asked for better.

I also had the pleasure of sitting next to a mother and her 21 month old daughter.  There were several of us that had been in the same predicament since we hit the bad weather in Chicago.  This mom and daughter stuck with us on the horrible 6 hour ordeal.  We barely heard a peep from her on the runway, and we didn’t hear a peep from her on the flight.  She was a model traveler!!  On our last flight from Dallas to AR, I was able to sit next to this mom and daughter and help entertain her.  I can’t imagine my daughter being that well behaved on a flight (or series of flights)!

When we arrived in Little Rock, we came down the escalators to witness a powerful sight.  A group of our national guard troops had arrived right before we did!  They had just arrived from a tour of many months in Iraq.  It was a beautiful sight to witness all of these folks hugging and kissing, crying and celebrating!  No matter you opinion on the war, these folks deserve our thanks for going to a place that is such a hell hole.

It has been an eventful few hours.  I may be silent for the next few days as I finish cleaning out the house and prepping it for sale.

4 down and 1 to go…

I am stuck in the Southwest terminal at Dallas Love, my 4th airport on this trip. My flight says that it will be leaving at 11:10, but seriously, can we really count on that?

This whole ordeal has made me think of all the gals that were trapped on the blog-her flight delays. I sure wish I had somewhere fun to go after this is all over!
